Post Office joins internet shopping market with “Swift Shipping” at all branches
In an effort to reverse its decline in revenue stream, the Guyana Post Office Corporation is entering the internet shopping market.
The Post Office  Corporation has partnered with the PAKYA shipping company out of Miami to ship packages to Guyana.
Initially, shipping will be done once weekly to Guyana, this will subsequently move to twice weekly with the increase in volumes.
Under the name, Swift Shipping, the Postmaster General, Karen Brown explained that the service will offer online shoppers a free mailbox in the US.
Customers will be given options to consolidate packages for shipment to Guyana. Ms. Brown added that Swift Shipping is mandated to function with the pillars of affordability, reliability and flexibility.
Customers will pay USD$6.25 for the first pound and USD $3 for each additional pound after, according to Brown.
Several employees of the GPOC were on Thursday assisting dozens of persons at its Robb Street, Head Office to get signed up for the service.

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Cathy Hughes, said the launch signifies the start of the transformation and restructuring of the Post Office to make it competitive and necessary in the present age of electronic communication.
Minister Hughes added that there is heavy dependence on technology, which was in the past just in somebody’s imagination. She added that her ministry is working hard to provide an enabling environment in which e-commerce could strive.
“As we all know in this area, we are miles behind countries like the USA, Canada, Germany and China and even some our sister caribbean nations, but we are planning and putting things in place that will allow us to participate in electronic commerce or e-trade and we intend to fully utilize the special features that we have to do so”.
The Minister added that the Government is working on implementing the facilities and programmes for e-learning and telemedicine, interactive online public services for citizens, development of an online passport application programme and others. She noted that the Government is aiming for a fully digitized society.
The  President of PAKYA, Martha Ramos, was at the launch of the service and remarked that she is confident that all citizens of Guyana will be able to enjoy the services.
There are some 64 Post Offices throughout the country and the service will be offered at all of the post offices.
