PPP asks “Guardians of Democracy” to cut back in numbers at ballot box watch

With the World Health Organisation encouraging more social distancing in wake of the coronavirus, the People’s Progressive Party now wants its supporters who have been hosting large vigils outside GECOM, to cut back in their numbers.

The persons who have been calling themselves “Guardians of Democracy” have been ignoring warnings about social gatherings. Almost nightly, scores of persons supportive of the PPP and the small parties would gather outside the Elections Commission to keep their eyes on containers with ballot boxes inside the GECOM compound.

In a statement this evening, the PPP said cognizant of the public health threat posed by the outbreak of the coronavirus and its deadly impact on many countries around the world, it is urging all to safeguard against the virus.

The Party is now suggesting that no more than 25 persons should be present at the location at any given time.

The PPP is also encouraging persons who want to be part of the ballot box watch to register at its Freedom House headquarters as it prepares a schedule for the nightly watch.
