PPP requests additional Police presence at Govt. buildings to “safeguard” state assets

The People’s Progressive Party, while waiting on an official declaration from the Guyana Elections Commission, is preparing itself to return to Government and has requested the Police Force to increase its presence at Government buildings.

The request was made during a meeting this morning between the Police Commissioner and senior officials in the PPP including the Presidential and Prime Ministerial Candidates.

After the meeting, Presidential Candidate Irfaan Ali told reporters that state assets need to be secured the same way they were back in 2015 when there was a change in government.

“You would recall in 2015, there were Police Officers stationed at every Ministry and Department while the transition was taking place. So we raised this with the Commissioner…and we have asked him to look at this and ensure that systems are in place to safeguard to state assets and documents”, Mr. Ali said.

He said during the meeting, the issue of security across the country after the declaration of results was also raised.

Mr. Ali said there have been threats and statements on social media that should be of concern and the Police Commissioner indicated that those issues are being monitored. He said anyone browsing social media would see varying attempts at race baiting and efforts to divide the people of Guyana. Most of the inflammatory statements, he said, appear to be coming from persons who are living outside of Guyana.

“A lot of these persons who are doing this, trying to divide our people racially, are those living outside of Guyana, who have no interest in coming back here but seem bent on creating mischief”, he said.

It was the PPP that requested the meeting with the Police Commissioner. The meeting also covered a number of other issues.
