President believes government deserving of an “A grade” for cleaning up mess left by PPP

“We inherited a public telecommunications sector in which there was a fibre optic cable disaster; it’s a cemetery, but nobody talks about that. We inherited hundreds of millions of dollars wasted. We inherited a sugar industry with Skeldon factor which is underperforming. We inherited a criminal situation where hundreds of people have been killed with no inquest” President Granger pointed out.

President believes government deserving of an “A grade” for cleaning up mess left by PPP

After 21 months in office President David Granger is of the view that his government’s performance is deserving of an “A grade” after having to clean up the mess left by the former administration.

The President shared this view on Friday on his weekly television show ‘The Public Interest’ which was aired by the state-owned National Communications Network (NCN).

“I would give them an A grade” he said, adding that the executive has done much in light of what was inherited from the Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP) administration.

He added that even to this day, many of the children who were five or six years old in 2000 and 2003 when the “troubles” started, are now 19 and early 20s and are the ones committing the crimes they might have witnessed as children.

During that era, under then President, and now Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, crime had surged and over 400 young, predominately afro-Guyanese males were killed execution style, while some disappeared with no trace.

These activities were link to a so-called “phantom squad” which the then Home Affairs Minister, Ronald Gajraj was reportedly involved in.

Additionally, President Granger said that the APNU+AFC government is presently faced with numerous cases in the courts where billions of dollars are owed because of unsettled debts by the previous government.

He explained too that some of the persons who have been corrupted by the “period of the troubles” are still around and the government is still trying to deal with those individuals on a daily basis.

“So all of this mess we are trying to clean up. The progress we have made in the last 21 months have been phenomenal in terms of trying to make Guyana a law governed country and to introduce due regularity into government’s business. I would say we are doing quite well and the Guyanese people could look forward to a much improved quality of governance by the time we come to an end of our first term” he concluded.
