President calls for more united and professional Police Force to tackle crime

President Irfaan Ali today charged ranks of the Guyana Police Force to step up their crime-fighting efforts to bring an end to the current increase in criminal activities being witnessed across the country.

The President issued the call during the handing over ceremony for 50 new pickup vehicles for the Guyana Police Force.

During his address, the President said the government will also be investing in marine assets to aid in crime-fighting.

He said a robust approach must be created to combat crime, but that approach can only be successful if the Guyana Police Force is united and if ranks act professionally.

“All of this depends on a Force that is nimble, a Force that is united, a force that is focused, and a force that is professional. And that is all is all we seek,” the President said.

Mr. Ali also said the Guyana Police Force must position itself to withstand public scrutiny and operate in a transparent and open manner.

“The focus is heavily towards proactive policing that is key, proactive policing…, I committed my administration to provide the Police Force with the resources it needs to keep our people safe. This task, I noted, would involve training, the provision of modern equipment, and strengthening the force’s capacity for rapid response,” the President further noted.

President Ali said he has taken note of the robberies and acts of violence committed against citizens in recent times and he wants to see the force take condign action against the perpetrators.

“Citizens must be able to walk the streets unmolested, and free from fear. Similarly, the home invasion must be curbed.”

The President urged ranks to use the 50 new vehicles to increase their response capabilities.
