The Government of Guyana this morning announced that President David Granger will leave the country on Thursday, July 23 for Washington DC where he will address the US Hemispheric Conference on Defence and Security matters.
The conference is taking place at the Washington Centre for Hemispheric Studies. The President will be accompanied by Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Mark Phillips.
This will be the President’s first official visit to the United States since being sworn into office. An earlier trip to the US was a personal private trip.
The announcement was made this morning by Minister of State, Joe Harmon who also announced that the President will meet with officials of the US State Department while attending the Washington meeting.
President Granger has been keeping up a busy travel schedule since being sworn into office. Just last weekend he returned to Guyana from the the Mercosur conference for South American leaders in neighbouring Brazil. Just two days before that visit, the President was in Ethiopia attending a UN Meeting on Sustainable Development. Earlier this month, President Granger attended the CARICOM Heads of Government Conference in Barbados.
At all of those overseas engagements, the President has been raising the issue of the Venezuela threats to Guyana and the two decrees that were issued by the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, claiming Guyana’s oil rich waters.
He is expected to raise the issue again.
