In an address that started more than 30 minutes late and went on for more than two hours, President Irfaan Ali earlier tonight outlined his Government’s development plan for the next five years, as part of his second term in office.
He said the Government will be implementing a number of plans and programmes that are people centred and that will push development of citizens. He said there will be massive expansion in all sectors under the Government’s watch. The President promised a more equal distribution of the country’s economic wealth and the creation of better quality jobs in the country.
The President there will be continuous diversification of the economy and more projects will be put in place to directly impact the lives of citizens, including the setting up of an interest-free Development Bank.
According to the President, in the building of a prosperous future, there will be the need for a more united and disciplined Guyana where needs and wants are not the only things to be addressed.
The President announced that there will be continuous cash transfers over the next five years. He said next year’s budget will cater for a $100,000 cash grant for every Guyanese 18-years and older. The President said other cash grants will be provided over the five year term of his Government.
The Because We Care Cash Grant, he said, will continue over the next five years and the Government will be working to get it up to $100,000 annually per child by the end of its five year term. For old age pensioners, he said their old age pension is expected to increase annually over the next five years, and should eventually reach $60,000 per month by the end of his term in office.
The President said a number of other bold measures will be outlined in the coming months and years as his Government pushes its agenda forward.
