Government to update Migration Policy to safeguard security and territorial integrity -Pres. Ali

President Irfaan Ali has announced that his government plans to update the country’s migration policy, with the country’s security and territorial integrity expected to feature prominently in that policy.

Addressing the nation last evening on his Government’s five year plan, the President said Guyana remains open to skilled persons and persons seeking opportunities here, but said that position must not compromise Guyanese.

The President said Guyana will never accept surrendering of its borders or subordinate the rights and interest of the Guyanese people, and promised that the comprehensive policy would address a wide range of issues on how to protect Guyanese.

“Everyone in Guyana must be documented, accounted for and here for a clear purpose and period. This will be achieved through modern digital system like the e-ID, through enforcement and full transparency of the public. We will prove that Guyana could be both fair and strong,” the President noted.

The President said the strategy would ensure also that Guyanese businesses and talent are not displaced by those seeking to move here. He urged greater collaboration in that regard.

“Guyana can be both fair and strong, open to contribution and closed to disorder and united in one unshakable truth, that this land belongs to all of Guyana today and for generations to come. In a world where threats move at the speed of data, intelligence, cyber security and digital resilience are now frontline defences,” the President said in his address.

Additionally, the President said that the Government’s digital push would also help to detect threats to the country and put measures in place to eliminate those threats. He said the country’s territorial integrity remains non-negotiable, hence the Government’s continued investment in the Armed Forces to ensure that they are equipped to respond to threats.

“Guyana’s security strategy is built on a simple but unbreakable principle—protecting Guyanese lives, Guyanese livelihood, Guyanese sovereignty, while securing their progress, they have worked so hard to achieve. We begin with people, safety in our community is the foundation of national security,” the President stated.

President Ali acknowledged that the country’s new economic prospects can attract criminal elements from within the region. He stated that the Government has one of the most robust security partnerships within the region to ensure information sharing to prevent transnational crime.
