Prison Service announces “legal” phone system for families and friends to contact prisoners

The Guyana Prison Service has announced that efforts are being made to allow family members and friends of prisoners to communicate with the prisoners legally.

The Prison Service has provided a series of telephone numbers to facilitate contact at the various locations.

In a statement, the Prison Service noted that any requests made by prisoners for phone credit transactions should be reported as it is prohibited.

A number of the phone numbers provided for the service at the various prison locations appear to be mobile numbers.

When questioned about how those calls will be monitored, the Prison Director, Gladwin Samuels, said monitoring will be done. He did not bother to offer any details.

Additionally, he would not say what amount of calls a prisoner could access per month and the time limit attached to those calls.

Most prisons do not allow family members or friends to call in to the prisons.

Since the jailbreak and fire, which gutted most of the camp street prison, searches at the various prison facilities have unearthed a number of mobile phones in the prisons. Just last evening, a recently remanded prisoner who is still in custody appeared on an evening newscast in a video statement that was done with a mobile phone from within the prison.
