Professor Harold Lutchman to head APNU+AFC List of Candidates

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana and well respected academic, Professor Harold Lutchman will head the APNU+AFC Coalition’s list of candidates which will be presented to the Guyana Elections Commission on Nomination Day, Tuesday 6th April, 2015.

Lutchman agreed to head the list following several meetings with leaders of the coalition movement. Sources close to the Professor have indicated that he is pleased to be involved in the process and is confident that he could easily handle the job.

As head of the list, Lutchman will also oversee the agreement entered into by the APNU+AFC to ensure that the parties stick to their Valentine’s Day pact, The Cummingsburg Accord.  Being head of the list also makes Lutchman a member of the list of candidates for the coalition.

Under that agreement, the parties have specific numbers of seats that will be guaranteed to them whether they win or lose the elections. Following consultations with the parties, it will be Lutchman who will have to present the extracted list of representatives to the Guyana Elections Commission.

Under the accord, the two parties had agreed that the head of the list would be someone who is drawn from civil society. A number of other persons were consulted during the process.

During his distinguished career, Professor Lutchman also served as a Member of the Caribbean Court of Justice’s Board of Trustees and was a member of the Disciplined Forces Commission in Guyana which made several recommendations for the reformation and transformation of the Guyana Police Force and the other disciplined services.

He worked in the Caribbean during the early 1990’s and was encouraged to return to Guyana serve as UG’s Vice Chancellor by late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan. He served in that position until his retirement.

The coalition has expressed full confidence in his abilities.
