Region 4 Council passes no-confidence motion against REO

One day after the Region Four Chairman, Daniel Seeram called for the removal of the Regional Executive Officer, Donald Gajraj, over several infractions, APNU+AFC Council Members used their majority on the Council and passed a no-confidence motion against the REO.

The REO who had earlier objected to the tabling of the motion and subsequent debate, stormed out of the debate along with councilors of the PPP/C.

The APNU+AFC holds a majority on the Council, while the REO was appointed by the Government. The motion of no confidence against the REO was tabled by APNU+AFC Councillor Hazle Pyle- Lewis and was seconded by Councillor Joseph De Nobrega.

The motion resolved that the REO who is the Clerk of Council refused to implement multiple directives, motions, and decisions passed by the Regional Democratic Council—the duly elected governing body.

It further stated that as Clerk of Council, the REO defiantly refuses to arrange Regional Administrative Committee meetings as directed by the Council.

Mr. Gajraj was also accused of not submitting financial statements to the Council.

During a press conference on Monday, the Regional Chairman accused the REO of setting the stage for corruption in the Region by awarding contracts without the knowledge of the Council and not providing crucial information to the Works Committee about the contractors who are being awarded multi-million-dollar contracts in the region.

That accusation also formed part of the motion filed against the REO.
The Region Four Chairman has since dispatched a letter to the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development informing him of the Council’s no confience in the current REO.
