Region Four REO under fire over mic snatching from Chairman at Regional flag raising ceremony

The controversial Regional Executive Officer for Region Four, Donald Gajraj is coming under fire and facing calls for his resignation after he snatched the microphone from Regional Chairman Daniel Seeram during the region’s flag raising ceremony on Wednesday.

The Regional Chairman was wrapping up his speech at the flag raising ceremony when he invited Member of Parliament Cathy Hughes to the podium to offer remarks at the event.

The REO objected to Hughes being allowed to offer brief remarks, declaring that she was not on the programme and the programme should be followed.

As the Regional Chairman attempted to ignore Gajraj’s objection, Gajraj snatched the microphone from him, while declaring that he was in charge of the day’s programme.

The Regional Chairman stepped back from the podium and left the event, explaining that he invited the visiting MP to offer brief remarks and there should have been no issue with that invitation.

The entire incident took place in front of Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, regional officials and dozens of school children who were in attendance along with other invited guests.

Today, APNU+AFC Member of Parliament Ganesh Mahipaul said the REO who was appointed by the PPP Civic administration was out of line and disrespectful. Mahipaul said Gajraj was a political appointee, who has been causing several problems at the Region 4 administration. He said Gajraj should be removed from the position.

Members of Parliament, Cathy Hughes, Amanza Walton-Desir and Tabitha Sarabo-Halley have also called out the regional executive officer for his “distateful and embarassing” actions.

The Opposition said with all of the Government’s talk of “One Guyana”, the actions of the REO proved that the “One Guyana” mantra is all talk and nothin else.
