Rain dampens return of Mashramani float parade, but thousands line streets

Peristent rainfall could do very little to keep the crowds away as thousands packed the Mashramani parade route to get a glimpse of the costume and Mash bands that took part in the event.

This year’s Mashramani parade was the first one to be held after a two-year break that was owed to the COVID-19 pandemic.

From early Thursday morning, families could be seen setting up picnic and hangout spots all along the route.

The parade got off to a late start as overcast skies and intermittent showers dampened the day’s activities.

However, by early afternoon, the bands started to make their way along the parade route.

There was hardly any private sector participation in this year’s costume parade. The majority of bands were from Government Ministries and Government agencies and regional offices.

With just over 10 bands on display, revellers and roadside patrons alike, enjoyed the offering.

Security was tight all along the parade route as the Guyana Police Force and Private Security agents kept watch over the day’s activities. There were no reports of any major incident.

The parade ended under heavy rainfall and dark skies, which also forced the postponement of last evening’s Masharama show as the weather office warned of a tropical storm, that eventually had the final say on Mashramani day.
