General Secretary of the opposition People’s Progressive Party, Clement Rohee, has issued a call for Health Minister Dr. George Norton to be fired as the party continues to express dissatisfaction with his behavior in the National Assembly recently and in his management of the health sector.
The Party has also responded with dissatisfaction to the government’s proposed review of the controversial storage bond contract and said it does not care for an apology from the Minister.
At a press conference on Monday, Party General Secretary Clement Rohee told media operatives that the review of three year contract for lease of the new bond and a reexamination of the monthly cost of $12.5 million is not enough.
Rohee said Dr. Norton should be sent packing and he reasoned that if a PPP Minister had done what Dr. Norton did, the same would have been asked of the PPP.
The PPP is also not mindful for any public apology over statements that Norton made in the National Assembly about the payment for the New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation and about the new storage bond already being in operation.
Rohee recalled that when the Minister was asked in the National Assembly to provide the details with respect to the location, the rental and certification of the bond, he sought to make a mockery of the questions.
The PPP stands by its commitment that Dr. Norton must go before the Privileges Committee and face the full brunt of the penalties.
But although the Minister may have misled the House on some aspects of the contract, the government said it is satisfied that the building has all the necessary facilities for the storage of drugs.
The PPP GS also drew attention to Dr. Norton’s move to have the Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital dismissed.
“Mr. Norton is in no position to dismiss the CEO of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. That is the responsibility of the Board… but this is where we keep saying the political interference keeps taking place. Mr. Norton has absolutely no role in determining what decisions should be taken by the Board,” Rohee added.
