Veteran Guyanese broadcaster and theatre actor, writer and director, Ron Robinson, passed away this morning at his home, leaving a rich legacy in media and the the theatre stage behind.
Robinson was 79-years-old.
He started his broadcast career at the age of 19 and continued in that path for six decades. His acting career started while he was young boy. He grew up to be one of the most celebrated actors, writers and directors.
Tributes have been pouring all day today. Attorney General Anil Nandlall said over the last six decades, Ron Robinson’s voice became etched in the ears of generations of Guyanese and arguably cemented itself as part of the permanent radio landscape of Guyana. To many from this period, the voice of Ron Robinson was the voice of radio in Guyana.
His contributions, however, extended beyond radio. He had a long stint as a news anchor on television when it first emerged in Guyana, the Attorney General said, while reminding that Ron Robinson also had a long lasting career in stage and theatre production.
The Guyana Press Association in its statement said Ron Robinson was one of the longest-serving broadcasters in Guyana, who served the media with professionalism, effectiveness, and distinction.
According to the GPA, Ron Robinson brought elegant energy to his morning drive-time radio shows, and delivered the news with authority and conducted countless interviews that upheld the highest tenets of journalism.
“Whether on radio, television, or online, Ron Robinson consistently set and maintained a high standard. He approached his work with thorough preparation and generously mentored many within the media fraternity”, the GPA said.
The PNC Reform said Ron Robinson’s contributions to journalism and broadcasting have left an indelible mark on Guyana’s media industry. According to the party, his dedication, professionalism, and distinctive presence will be fondly remembered by colleagues and audiences alike.
Earlier this year, Ron Robinson was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award on World Press Freedom Day and a special stage show was hosted in his honour at the Theatre Guild celebrating his 70 years in theatre and 60 years in broadcasting.
