As Campaign 2015 heats up in the run up to the May 11 elections, President Donald Ramotar is pleading that he begin another term in office, as he faces the opposition coalition APNU-AFC.
Speaking at the annual Memorial for the founder of the People’s Progressive Party, Dr. Cheddi Jagan on Sunday, Mr. Ramotar said Guyanese should stick at his side in the name of Dr. Jagan and the PPP.
“I ask y0u in the name of Cheddi Jagan and in the name of the PPP, I ask you to stand by me on May 11 as we go forward to win these elections”, Ramotar told the large crowd gathered at the memorial site.
Referring the over 11,000 Berbicians who voted for the Alliance For Change at the last elections, Ramotar cautioned them against “making mistakes at this time”. He said “our country has gone through too much. We cannot reverse, now is the time for us to continue on the direction that we have started.”
The President told also told the gathering that they ought not to be carried away with the coalition and the name that they will be heading into at the upcoming elections. He said the only people who would keep changing their names would be criminals.
Ramotar spoke about “development in the social sector” under his administration and spoke about the one laptop project and the Education Ministry’s $10,000 a year grant to parents which was launched last year.
He said the opposition coalition had no real plans for Guyana but just wants “power for the sake of power”.
He said the Opposition parties over the past three years blocked progress and development under his administration with their majority in the parliament.
According to the President, he prorogued the parliament and left that prorogation in place because he knew it was time to head to the polls and he wanted to ensure more persons had time to have their names added to the voters list.
He said that under a new PPP government, Guyanese could expect the hydro power project to take off before the end of this year.
That project has been promised in a number of previous manifestos.
The PPP believes it is well set to ensure the project takes off should it regain the majority in the National Assembly.
The Opposition parties have in the past called for more transparency with the project.
The party’s faithful were told that as they reflect on the work and life of Dr. Cheddi Jagan, they ought to stay with his vision and the PPP on elections day.
