A 17-year-old young man drowned on Saturday evening in the pool of the Princess International Hotel at Providence. He has been identified as Shemar Edwards of East Ruimveldt.
The incident reportedly took place moments after 6 o’ clock as evening was setting in.
According to reports, the lad was in the company of friends celebrating one of the friend’s graduation, when he encountered difficulties while swimming in the pool and disappeared under the water.
According to friends, they were all getting ready to leave the hotel pool area, when the teen who they described as a “good swimmer”, turned back and said he wanted to take one more plunge. He leaped into the pool and loud screams were heard coming from his friends moments later.
By the time he was pulled from the pool, he was already unconscious. He was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is believed that he may have hit his head during the dive.
The Princess Hotel pool has three different areas. One for children, another for learners and the third area is for strong swimmers. The hotel does not have a lifeguard on duty during the evening and there are a number of signs posted close to the pool indicating persons entering the pool were doing so at their own risk and should exercise caution.
