President Donald Ramotar said he was not surprised with the sudden resignation of Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud. According to the President he has been having conversations with Persaud over a period and may have picked up that he wanted to go.
The Local Government Minister on Thursday announced that he was no longer interested in serving in the cabinet. He tendered his resignation from the senior Government position and thanked his surprised staff for their support over the years. His resignation takes effect from the end of this month.
On Friday, President Donald Ramotar hop scotched around questions about whether he asked the Minster to tender his resignation. When News Source, repeatedly asked the President if the Minister was asked by him to resign, Mr. Ramotar would only say that he accepted the Minister’s resignation.
“Was he asked by the Government, by you Sir to resign?”, News Source Chief Editor Gordon Moseley inquired from the Head of State. The President responded by saying “I accepted his resignation”. Asked again, whether he asked the Minister to resign from his post, Mr. Ramotar who appeared agitated said ” I accepted his resignation”.
He would not go into details about concerns other members of the cabinet had with the Local Government Minister’s performance. Multiple Government sources have said that Local Government Minister was asked to step down from office.
In his resignation letter, the Minister thanked the President for his support over the years and said although he has resigned for personal reasons, he will remain committed to working for the governing party, the People’s Progressive Party.
The President said he has not yet decided on a replacement for Ganga Persaud, noting that there is already a junior Minister in the Ministry who could not handle the job.
