PPP looks to replace Ganga in Parliament

The People’s Progressive Party has started a search for a  new Member of Parliament. PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee on Monday indicated that former Minister of Local Government, Ganga Persaud has decided not to attend sittings of the National Assembly.

Initially, the PPP had indicated that Persaud would have remained as a Member of Parliament although he was no longer a Minister. However, the PPP did some rearranging of its seats in the National Assembly and Minister of Human Services Jennifer Webster found herself in the front bench previously occupied by Ganga Persaud.

Persaud would have been moved to the back bench on the Government side.

He was asked to resign from his position as a Minister by President Donald Ramotar under a cloud of controversy that surrounded a “sensitive situation”, as explained by the General Secretary of the party.

The former Minister had indicated that personal reasons were behind his decision to step down from office. While President Donald Ramotar dodged questions about the resignation, the Home Affairs Minister and Party General Secretary Clement Rohee made it clear that it was the Office of the President that asked Ganga Persaud to resign from his position.

Reports indicate that Persaud was not happy with Rohee’s decision to tell the nation that his resignation was asked for by the President.
