Two Guyanese women who were on their way to New York city, were busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Friday afternoon with over 20 pounds of cocaine in their suitcases.
The two women were traveling separately but would have been on the same flight. Their identities have not been released, but one of the women is a 40-years-old and hails from a village along the East Coast of Demerara while the other woman is a 29-year-old Georgetown resident.
Up to news time, the two women were being questioned by agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, which made the bust. CANU is looking to see if there are any links between the two cases and may already be following a number of leads.
CANU has been stepping up its monitoring of outgoing passengers at the Cheddi Jagan Airport and the Ogle Airport and its increased scrutiny of passengers has resulted in several busts this year.
Additionally, the agency has been working closer with the Narcotics Branch of the Guyana Police Force and has been gaining more support from the Drug Enforcement Agency of the United States.
