A Mahaicony woman identified as Awena Rutherford is under Police guard at the Georgetown hospital after she allegedly murdered her two young children by forcing them to ingest a poisonous substance. The woman reportedly attempted to take her own life after giving the children the poison.
The two children died on Thursday night at two separate hospitals as doctors fought to save their lives. The woman’s 18-month old son died an East Coast Hospital after being rushed there while the 4-year-old daughter passed away at the Georgetown Hospital while undergoing emergency treatment.
The mother is being treated at the Georgetown Hospital for poisoning. It is believed she also ingested the same poisonous substance that took the lives of her two children. Hospital sources have told News Source that the woman appears weak and disoriented.
Investigators believe that she took the children to her Mahaicony home and forced them to ingest the poison because of a strained relationship with the father of the children who lives in the United States. The children were in the care of a relative until Thursday afternoon when the woman picked them up.
A full investigation is under way.
