A 35-year-old miner is in custody after he stabbed a fellow miner to death during a drunken row over cigarettes.
According to a Police report, 20-year-old Daniel George was stabbed to death on Wednesday night at Barakat Landing in the Mazaruni river area.
The two men were drinking alcoholic beverages at a shop in the area when a row broke out over some cigarettes. During the row, the elder miner grabbed a knife and stabbed the young man to his abdomen and right eye.
The youth died on the spot and the suspect was arrested just after. Charges are to be laid in the matter soon.
There have been several cases of miners being killed during drunken brawls in the interior region for this year already.
