GECOM sees credible voters list being ready by December 25

The Guyana Elections Commission has indicated to the Caribbean Court of Justice that the date by which a credible voters list would be ready for early elections would be December 25, 2019.

The revelation was made this afternoon during submissions by the Attorneys before the Caribbean Court of Justice as the Court gets ready to hand down consequential orders.

The Opposition wants elections to be held within three months, however, GECOM’s Attorney Stanley Marcus explained that the earliest date for the list to be ready would be Christmas day and the elections could be held anytime after that.

The Judges of the CCJ quizzed Mr. Marcus about whether that would not fall outside of the Constitutional requirements for elections to be held within three months. He reminded them that the Constitution also caters for elections to be held at a later date after the three months once it has been approved by the National Assembly.

Mr. Marcus told the CCJ that one has to take into account that there are several other systems that have to be put in place before the elections are held and he believes that the framers of the Constitution would have contemplated that by inserting that the National Assembly could approve an extension.

Marcus told the Court that GECOM would have been paying attention to the many moves to the Court following the no-confidence motion.

The CCJ President said he is disappointed by that date.
