South American Youth record holder and gold medalist, Jason Yaw is adjusting well to college life in Texas despite having financial difficultly.

In an exclusive with News Source Sport, Yaw who is now attending Western Texas College pointed out that adjusting to the training is proving to be a walk in the park.

“Well I’m adjusting well with the training it’s not hard enough like back in Guyana but I’m coping with it so far,” Yaw highlighted.

The top quarter-miler also highlighted the difference in the level of competition.

“The competition over here is much harder because we have to compete with top university that is well equipped, well-trained and have better facilities than us,” Yaw stated.

Meanwhile Yaw revealed that his time in Texas since he arrived in January has not always been easy.

“Right now I’m not financially strong and the college says that I can’t work off campus so its rough, I have basically been going two months without money,” Yaw indicated to News Source Sport.

Nevertheless, Yaw who ran 46.79s to set the South American Youth 400m record is keen to upgrade himself with the scholarship opportunity.

“Well my aim is to work hard physically and academically to move from this college and go to a top university in texas, but for this year I don’t have anything specific planned out,” Yaw mentioned.

The 6ft. 3″ sprinter also noted the difference in coaching.

“Well in Guyana the way we had a lot of supervision from our coach, like when coach Julian Edmonds give us work and he normally encourage us to finish the program, but over here the coaches don’t do that as much they expect you to be disciplined,” Yaw stressed.

However, Yaw also noted that Guyana needs to improve in order for track and field to be better.

“Wow a lot of things first to say treatment for the athlete’s, can’t really think of anything specific at the moment but Guyana have much more to do when it come to track and field in order to improve,” Yaw quipped.
