Miss Guyana World Rafieya Husain ended Guyana’s 43 year old finals drought at the Miss World Pageant when she landed in the Final Top 10. However, she did not make it to the Top 5 of the show which was eventually won by Miss South Africa.
For being the only Caribbean delegate to make it that far, Husain was also crowned Miss World Caribbean. Additionally, she tied with four other delegates for the top position in the Beauty with a Purpose segment of the show. That segment paid attention to the interests and platform of the delegates. Miss Guyana told the story of domestic violence in Guyana through a 5 minute video.
She highlighted the story of a 21-year-old domestic violence victim who lost her one of her arms and fingers on the other hand along with her children to a cutlass wielding husband.
Miss Guyana has launched her own project to assist victims of domestic violence and has been using her crown to do just that. Because she has finished at the top of the table with the Beauty With a Purpose project, the Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Miss World Pageant will visit Guyana to see the project up close and lend assistance from the Miss World Organisation.
As Miss World Caribbean, Rafieya is expected to be the face of the organisation in this part of the world. According to the Guyana Franchise Holder, Natasha Martindale, Miss Guyana will now be under contract with the Miss World Organisation.
Martindale who has added new life to the Guyana Miss World organisation since becoming the franchise holder, said she is very proud of Miss Guyana and looks forward to continue working with her for the rest of her reign and into the future.
The last time Guyana placed in the Miss World Top 10 was in 1971 when Nalini Moonsar placed 4th.
