Government exploring connector road options to manage traffic from new Demerara Bridge

The Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Housing are exploring various options for the construction of a new connector road linking Providence on the East Bank corridor to the Ogle–Eccles Highway.

Minister of Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, said once the plans are finalized and construction commences, the new road will minimize disruption and delays in the area.

With the new Demerara Harbour Bridge set to be open this month and traffic expected to increase along Eccles area and the Heroes highway, the Minister said the new road will address those challenges.

Ministers Edghill and Croal, who were on a site visit to the new Demerara Harbour bridge yesterday said best options are being explored to ensure minimal disruptions of communities.

“We are continuing the road to providence, so that there could be a smooth connection from that highway to this highway. What we are examining right now is the alignment from the back to come out to the front about two kilometres between the Heroes highway and that (new) road,’ the Minister said.

Mr. Edghill said it was recognized that with all of the development taking place along the East Bank corridor and with the new bridge, a new connector road will become necessary.

“A similar road, like what you find what Haag Bosh, when you leave the roundabout at Haag Bosh, you can go all the way down to Ogle, a similar situation we are trying to establish, where when you come out of this roundabout you have a 2 Kilometre road that will carry you to connect with the continuation of that road that is coming through from the back and we are exploring those possibilities,” the Minister stated.

Meanwhile, Housing Minister, Collin Croal, said several options are currently being explored, especially as it relates to road passage through the Providence communities, works have already started in the back lands around the Ogle area.

“This is very important because not only because of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge, that will be coming to being very shortly but also as part of the opening up of other road highways etc, this is part of the ongoing Infrastructure that we have going on,” Mr. Coral said.

The goal according to Mr. Croal is to create additional road networks while limiting the inconvenience to residents.
