While outlining his Government’s development plan for the country, President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday evening made another pitch for Guyanese living in diaspora to return home to seek out investment opportunities, promising that the Government will create the enabling environment to protect their investments.
President Ali, who is currently leading a delegation to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, met members of the Guyanese diaspora in New York at an event last evening, and assured them that Guyana would welcome their return home with open arms.
The President said the country is putting systems in place to match the services they are afforded outside of Guyana.
“Let me assure you, that the Guyana that we are building is ready and willing to welcome you with open arms, whether you decide to return permanently or whether you simply want to invest, mentor, share expertise, or want to visit for a few month’s each year, we are ready for you,” the President said.

He said a number of persons from the diaspora have been returning home to re-settle and invest, noting that the Government is willing to put systems in place to facilitate their smooth transition back home. \
“Very soon, we will be putting together some investment opportunities for you here in the diaspora and our private sector and citizens at home, I ask you to examine those opportunities and make full use of them, when they come your way” the President encouraged.
Speaking on the importance of the Guyanese diaspora, President Ali said the diaspora can be partners in the nation’s transformation and as such, the government will ensure that they are kept informed of the many opportunities available for them to be players in key sectors.
He said while some persons might be skeptical to take up the offer to return home and invest, they should make a visit to their homeland before any decision.
“You don’t have to take my word for it, you can come and see for yourselves the transformation unfolding before your very eyes. This is not hidden; this is not a dream deferred this is development happening in real time. For those who left a long time ago, the Guyana of today, is not the Guyana of yesterday, Guyana is no longer the land where people run from, we are now the land that people are running toward,” the President said.
The President described Guyana as the land of many opportunities. He said those opportunities should not be taken for granted by citizens at home and abroad. The Foreign Affairs Ministry has a special Diaspora Unit that aids in guiding those members of the diaspora wishing to return home and invest.
