More than five officers attached to the Customs and Licensing Departments of the Guyana Revenue Authority were taken into custody today by the Guyana Police Force as the Criminal Investigation Department probes a suspected car tax scam.
News Source understands that Police investigators swooped down on the GRA headquarters this morning and took the officers into custody. Two of the officers are senior Customs Officers, News Source understand.
The suspected tax scam is reportedly linked to a popular East Coast Demerara car dealership and its management.
Police suspect the car dealership has been colluding with a group of customs officers in making false declarations with regard to the engine size and manufacture year for a number of vehicles that were imported, thereby cheating the Revenue Authority out of hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes.
In some cases, it is suspected that the value of the vehicles was significantly reduced to attract lower taxes. A number of luxury cars that were imported are under the microscope of the investigators.
There were recent reports of a massive car theft and export ring in Canada being linked to Guyana. Investigations are ongoing.
