Education Ministry launches new series of Primary textbooks for Mathematics and Social Studies

The Ministry of Education has launched its new Primary textbook Series “Mathematics Made Easy,” and “Social Studies: Guyanese in the World”. The launching took place at the Round House in Kingston. 

The textbooks were designed using culturally relevant and modern materials that are aligned with the Education Ministry’s new Primary curriculum for both Mathematics and Social Studies. 

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand said the textbooks will not only increase access to learning material, but will also enhance the learning experience of Primary School children. 

“It is our Social Studies book with our natural regions, our administrative regions, our religious and national holidays, and our national symbols. And the book also is a work book so children will be able to do exercises in the books, and work along with these books, and that’s the Social Studies. The Mathematics Book is very similar. Our Mathematics at our level with the ability to write inside the book. So, it is a work book from Grades 1-6. That ought to reduce our cost of buying books,” Minister Manickchand said. 

Ms. Manickchand said the books were compiled by experts in the field, using local education specialists and teachers over a three-year period.

A science text book is also in the making. 

Assistant Chief Education Officer for Literacy, Stembiso Grant, explained that the Social Studies Books 1-4 – Guyanese in the World, and the Mathematics Made Easy Books 1-3, have been launched in keeping with the Government’s commitment to investing in education and the development of children. 

She said the Social Studies series represent a systematic, coherent and progressive learning journey. 

“From exploring the dynamics of family and school life, to understanding the interconnectedness of communities, and nations, students are guided through a systematic, coherent and progressive learning journey that emphasizes the critical strands in the renewed curriculum, such as interactions and interdependence, dynamic relationships, power and authority ad resources and wealth. While this series serves as an informational text, each text emphasizes and harmonizes the individual, the community, and society. This series will instill in young learners a deep awareness of their society, culture, and environment while identifying factors that impact and influence their daily lives,” Grant explained.  

Similarly, she noted that the “Mathematics Made Easy” series will give children access to comprehensive and contextual approach to learning Mathematics.

It focuses on five strands of the new curriculum – number and operations, patters and relations, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability.

She said both series will provide a comprehensive and engaging resource for teachers and students, fostering confidence, creativity, and critical thinking in education.

In the past the Education Ministry had compiled the Atlantic Reader Series Books 1-6, which were placed in public schools for use. The work books are currently being developed.
