Rtd. Asst. Commissioner Slowe throws support behind APNU+AFC

As Assistant Police Commissioner, Paul Slowe was considered one of the most disciplined and professional senior officers to have ever served in the Guyana Police Force. He retired from the Force in 2010 after giving service for 37 years.

Today, the retired Assistant Commissioner of Police serves as the Security Manager for the West Indies Cricket Board. But he is currently back home lending support to the opposition coalition APNU+AFC as it gears up for the May 11 elections.

In an interview with News Source on Tuesday, Slowe declared that he was offering his full support to the APNU+AFC team. He said there is no secret that he wants the coalition to form the next Government of Guyana. He said his reasons behind that endorsement are clear.

“I think it is time that we come together as a nation. All of the races. And I think that the coalition offers the best chance of us coming together and uniting to make the country better”, Slowe said.

He noted also that for far too long, Guyana has seen racial division and great divisiveness across the country.

“Whether people want to admit it or not, for too long we have had this divisiveness  among us with the different ethnic groups and I think the coalition offers the best chance for us to come together and work as one”.  paul-slowe2

At one stage during his time as Police Commissioner, Slowe was considered a sure bet to be the Commissioner of the Guyana Police Force.

He never got that position and many believed that he was blocked reaching that office because of his professionalism and an incident in Berbice when he served there, when he rejected an order from the then Minister of Home Affairs Ronald Gajraj to return an illegal firearm to a man who had been nabbed by the police.

Slowe has always maintained his professionalism even as he was not promoted for 11 years. At his retirement parade in 2010, he remarked that “I have maintained my honour, integrity, and credibility. Those are values I hold very dearly. I have been able to hold my head up high wherever I go. I am not sure that we all can say and do that”.

He said though “you can never say never”, he is doubtful that he would accept any cabinet position that might be offered to him should the APNU+AFC coalition win the upcoming elections. Slowe explained that he is very happy with his current job with the WICB, but his passion and love for Guyana will always ensure that he remains keenly interested in all that is happening across the country.

The retired Assistant Commissioner of Police is offering security advice to the coalition as they hit the campaign trail. He said security remains a major issue in Guyana that cannot be ignored, noting that the crime situation must be given attention and must be arrested. According to Slowe, there is a need for a total change of the “security infrastructure” in Guyana that should focus on crime fighting so that Guyanese could feel more comfortable as they go about with their daily lives.

Guyana recorded over 140 murders last year and well over 600 cases of armed robberies were also committed during 2014. In the first two months of this year, the Police Force has already recorded over 20 murders and several cases of armed robberies.

Slowe told News Source that the next government would need to look at all the studies that have been done on the security situation in Guyana and all of the recommendations must be implemented. He made specific reference to the Disciplined Services Commission report which was accepted by the PPP Civic government but never fully put into force.

He is confident that an APNU-AFC government will do a better job at tackling the crime situation in the country and creating a safer environment for all the people of Guyana.
