14,000 new persons to be added to $100,000 cash grant register

14,000 new persons to be added to $100,000 cash grant register

A total of $72.5 Billion has been cleared by the Committee of Supply of the National Assembly for the distribution of a $100,000 cash grant to more to 716,261 persons this year.

During the consideration of the Budget estimates, Prime Minister Mark Phillips said for planning purposes, the Government has budgeted for almost 14,000 persons who will likely turn 18 this year at the time that the grant is ready to be distributed.

The Prime Minister did not give a specific timeline when the money will be paid, but would only say as early as possible after the passage of the Budget.

“Mr. Speaker, we are at this phase where we have a budget, when we pass this budget the Ministry of Finance will start the preparation for the disbursement of this money and the people of Guyana will be duly informed as to how soon we will start the payout. Our President has already communicated to the Guyanese people, that this money will be paid after budget 2026 is passed, so we will be working o pay his money as early as possible to the people of Guyana,” the Prime Minister stated.

The Prime Minister said the process for the payment will be explained by the Ministry of Finance. However, he noted that registration of over 600,000 persons was done for the payment of the first cash grant and that record will be updated.

He did say however, a new round of registration will be done for those who are now turning 18-years-old so that they too can be on the database.

“So, we will have to do a check of the list, update it and do some registration because many Guyanese, around 14,000 based on our estimation will be joining the 18-years and above list, obviously there will be deaths that you have to take off list so there will be a cleaning up exercise of the list,” the Prime Minister stated.

Opposition Member of Parliament, Vinceroy Jordan questioned the Prime Minister about whether an analysis was done to determine that $100,000 will be enough for all Guyanese, but the Prime Minister said the decision to pay the grant was in keeping a promise made by the Government.

“So, based on that promise made to the people by the PPP government we are feverously working towards the passage of this budget and to start the preparation to pay the people of Guyana including all off the members of the opposition, to pay you the $100,000 that you deserve and you qualify for by being a Guyanese and by being 18 years and above,” the Prime Minister stated.

The new round of payments will likely take place within months.
