The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has started to advertise teaching position as it seeks to fill 2,800 vacancies for senior teachers in the Education Sector.
During Monday’s consideration of the Budget Estimates, Minister of Governance, Gail Teixeira, made the revelation to the Committee of Supply.
More than $205 Million has been budgeted for the Teaching Service Commission under recurrent expenditure, and an additional $15 Million for works.
Minister Teixeira told the Committee that as of February 1, 2026, the Commission began advertising the vacancies for senior teachers in two of the local newspapers. Those positions include Head teachers at the nursery, primary and secondary levels.
Opposition MP Tabitha Sarabo-Halley of the WIN party raised questions about the vacancies that exist for junior positions, but was told that the Commission is awaiting guidance from the Ministry of Education.
“The Ministry of Education advises the Teaching Service Commission on how many teachers they would need at different levels. And with the new schools being opened – new primary schools, new secondary schools – they would have to indicate how many more teachers they need, and they would then look at what stock you have, and what more they would need to advertise and to hire,” the Minister of Governance explained.
The Committee was also reminded that later this year, a large number of teachers will be graduating from the Cyril Potter College of Education, and their official entrance into the Teaching Profession would help to fill vacancies, where they exist, for junior positions.
Meanwhile, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament, Ganesh Mahipaul, while expressing concern about the deplorable state of the Commission’s building, pointed out that in 2025 $15.4 Million was budgeted for the maintenance of the building, and in 2026, an additional $11 Million has been allocated. He asked the Governance Minister to detail the work being done.
“It is true that it is an old building, and it does need work and every year they are putting in some work into it. This year, under maintenance of buildings, they have put the reconfiguration of the third floor board room at $2.2 Million, the renovation of store rooms and the painting of the second floor of the commission at $3 Million,” Minister Teixeira explained.
Other works include the painting of sections of the Commission’s building including the fence.
