15 Police Officers currently before the Courts on murder, rape and other charges

A total of 15 Police Officers have so far found themselves on the other side of the law and facing criminal charges for this year, according to the Guyana Police Force.

Of the 15 Police Officers before the Courts, more than half of them are facing rape charges.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum reported last week that eight Police Officers are currently facing rape charges, while one is facing a charge of murder and the charges being faced by others include drug trafficking and causing death by dangerous driving.

Blanhum said notwithstanding the challenges confronting the Guyana Police Force, including misconduct, the Guyana Police Force continues to employ a number of strategies to bring down the number of serious crimes.

According to him, despite the fact that incidents of domestic murders doubled in 2025, there was a 12% reduction in all serious crimes due to the strategies employed.

He said during the course of the year, ranks have undergone tremendous training.

“During the year 2025 significant amount of ranks benefited from benefited from training programme, locally, regionally and internationally,” the Crime Chief said.

Mr. Blanhum said during the year 2025, the Guyana Police Force also capitalized on various opportunities to collaborate with other local, regional and international law enforcement agencies to increase the capacity of ranks to combat serious crimes.

Police Sergeant Philbert Kendall is among those before the Courts. He was charged with the murder of Linden resident, 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters.

Peters was killed in Linden on April 7, 2025, after being chased down by the Policeman who was not wearing his uniform and arrived in a private mini-bus.

Among the cops on remand for rape is 19-year-old Police Constable Erwin Gentle. He was remanded to prison earlier this year after being charged with the rape of a child under the age of 16.

Police Constable, Sherman Ferguson is also among those charged.

He was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The 31-year-old who pleaded not guilty, was intercepted in an intelligence-led operation along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway near Hauraruni in April. Police had discovered 34.6 kilograms of cannabis in a car he was driving.

Meanwhile, three other officers – 26-year-old Grenville Harris, 25-year-old Latchman Singh, and 39-year-old Floyd Pellew were jointly charged with larceny after they were accused of stealing 400 grams of suspected narcotics valued at $360,000 from the Ruimveldt Police Station in March 2025.

Also before the Court is 35-year-old Police Corporal Yonelle Cumberbatch, who was recently charged with causing death by dangerous driving after she hit down a 15-year-old schoolboy as he crossed the road on the pedestrian crossing.
