A 91-year-old man was rescued from his burning house this morning and is being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.
The elderly man was alone at home when neighbours raised an alarm after noticing smoke and fire in a section of the building.
Persons rushed into the house to assist the elderly man, Herbert Gaskin, to get out. He was brought out safely and rushed to the hospital.
One of his neighbours, Nadia Gravesande, told reporters that she was home resting, when she was alerted to the fire at her neighbour’s house.
“While lying down in the chair relaxing I heard these glasses start shattering. That was unusual, so I get out and I peek out and when I peek out only to find the neighbour next door house was on fire. It was totally on fire. I observed that the electrical wire started bursting and sparking. So, I ran out,” she recalled.

Gravesande said she contacted the Fire Service and within minutes, firefighters were on the scene. However, the wooden house was quickly gutted by the flames.
Another neighbour said just before the fire was spotted in the man’s house, there were several fluctuations of the power supply in the area.
“I smell like something burning, so I open my door and when I look through, all I see is flame. I started hollering for fire, and I pick up this duster and put on, but I ain’t know where to go, and I saw a guy was at the fence at the back and he called me, and tell me come out of the yard, he pushed me over the fence,” she recalled.
In a brief statement, the Guyana Fire Service said at 9:16hrs this morning, it responded to a report of a building being on fire at the corners of Durban and Palm Streets in Georgetown.
The GFS said firefighters were able to extinguished the fire, and prevented it from spreading to other nearby buildings.
