AG rejects accusations that Finance Minister was drunk driving

While the President, the Prime Minister and the Home Affairs Minister have all been dodging questions surrounding allegations of drunk driving by the Minister of Finance, the Attorney General of Guyana Anil Nandlall now claims that the allegations of the Minister being under the influence of alcohol and not submitting himself to a breathalyzer test have been rejected.

In a statement on Thursday on the accident that was caused by the Minister of Finance when he jumped a major road and slammed into another car injuring its two occupants, Nandlall said the accident was reported to the Police and the welfare of the injured persons is being looked at.

“The Minister was taken to a city hospital for medical attention shortly after the accident. An associate of the Minister facilitated the driver of the vehicle and the lone passenger to be taken to a city hospital for medical treatment. The matter was duly reported to the police and is being investigated”, the Attorney General said in a statement.

The Attorney General claims that without prejudice to the rights of all the parties to seek legal recourse,  he met with the driver, the owner of the vehicle and the passenger with a view of exploring the possibility of bringing the matter to an amicable end.

He said” allegations that the Minister of Finance was intoxicated and failed to submit himself to a breathalyzer test are rejected. Indeed, the Minister was not invited to take a breathalyzer test by anyone and in fact, the occasion to do so did not present itself.”

Several eyewitnesses who were at the scene of the Mashramani night accident on Sunday said the Minister appeared under the influence of alcohol and dazed when he emerged from his vehicle after slamming into the taxi. The Minister left the scene and his vehicle behind without offering assistance to the injured persons.

Moments after the accident, one of his close friends arrived at the scene, seeking to offer a financial settlement to the injured persons. The Opposition parties have called for the Police to let the law take its course against the Minister for his alleged intoxicated drive.
