Search crews attached to the Demerara Harbour Bridge launched a search in the Demerara River close to the bridge after a woman leaped to her death from the bridge.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon just after 3 o’ clock. According to the General Manager at the Bridge, Rawlston Adams, workers received reports that there was a woman who appeared “suicidal” walking along the bridge close to the edge. Security was immediately dispatched to verify the reports.
The woman was spotted and while being approached by security, she jumped overboard. He body disappeared under the murky brown water of the river close to Span 9 of the bridge.
Up to late Tuesday afternoon, the body had not been recovered. Management at the Bridge were reviewing security video recording to ascertain a description of the woman and the clothes she was wearing.
Investigations are underway.
In December last year, another woman jumped to her death off the bridge. Her relatives said she suffered from depression and a mental disorder.
Guyana has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
