Woman jumps to her death off of Demerara Harbour Bridge

Traffic was brought to a halt on the Demerara Harbour Bridge just after 12noon on Christmas eve after a driver reported seeing a woman climb to the top of the rails of the bridge and jump off  into the deep waters of the Demerara river.

Rescue teams rushed to the area but were unsuccessful in saving her. The lifeless body of the woman of indian descent was found just about 45 minutes after she was seen throwing her body off of the bridge.

The Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, Rawlston Adams confirmed the incident and he told News Source that an investigation was underway. He said the identity of the woman is not known but he also confirmed that her body has been recovered.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge links the East and West Banks of the Demerara River. It stretches for a mile long and is a floating bridge that would routinely retract to allow vessels to pass. Although there is heavy traffic on the bridge, it has a walkway for pedestrians and cyclists.
