Workers at the Child Care and Protection Agency stood in unity today as they rejected the vaccination requirement policy.
The government agency told staffers yesterday that the unvaccinated staffers would be locked out of the compound this morning.
The agency kept that promise but may have been thrown off when all of the workers stayed outside, those who are vaccinated and those who are not.
The workers said whether they are vaccinated or not, they do not feel comfortable with disclosing their health situation to the agency.
A number of government agencies and departments have been implementing the government policy, but today marked the first time that workers of one of those agencies decided to take a united position against the requirement for them to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or or produce a regular negative COVID-19 test result that they will have to carry the cost for.
The CCPA staffers are represented by the Guyana Public Service Union. The Vice President of the Union said the union completely rejects the government’s forced vaccination policy.
“it’s against your right for you to disclosed your medical status which should be personal and confidential” Ms Gardener noted.
The union representative insisted that the government needs to change its position and stop locking people out of their jobs.
The GPSU has joined forces with the Guyana Trades Union Congress and the Guyana Public Service Union in a move to the Court to challenge the vaccination policy.
“This is the position we want all public servants to take, even those who are vaccinated to come out in support of those who are not vaccinated” Ms. Gardener said.
Despite coming under mounting criticism, the government has not budged from its policy.
