Five-year-old Region 4 boy dies from COVID-19

A five-year-old boy from Region Four who tested positive for COVID-19 has died, according to information from the Ministry of Health.

There were no details released on the child’s health, but he was one of two recent deaths. The other person who passed away was a fully vaccinated 49-year-old.

The Ministry of Health has also reported that the country has recorded 49 additional cases of the virus. The death toll has climbed to 994.

There is growing concern about the new variant of COVID-19 which has been detected in a number of countries around the world.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony today said scientists and the medical community are still gathering information on the new variant. He said Guyana might soon have to submit samples to be tested for the new COVID-19 variant which is believed to be more infectious and faster spreading.

The Government has not made any decision about tightening border control in wake of the new variant. The current measures for incoming travelers to be fully vaccinated and present a negative COVID-19 test result will remain in place.
