Former President Donald Ramotar is the first political leader in Guyana to be given the Coronavirus vaccine.
In a post on social media, the former President announced that he has been vaccinated against the virus. He encouraged other citizens to take the vaccine when it becomes available to them.
“I know that many people have been frustrated that they cant get the chance to go out and they can’t get a chance to enjoy themselves and to socialise with friends and family. The quicker all of us take the vaccine, the faster we will get back to normalcy in our lives. So I want to encourage all of you that soon as the opportunity avails itself that you take the COVID-19 vaccine”, Mr. Ramotar said.
The former President said by taking the vaccine, citizens will also be contributing to the country making a faster recovery.
Later this week, Guyana will mark one year since the first Coronavirus case and death were recorded. The country has recorded more than 8500 cases since then with 203 deaths. The recovery rate remains at more than 90% in Guyana.
The Ministry of Health is currently in the process of rolling out a nationwide vaccination programme. The country has already received just over 100,000 vaccines and another 100,000 vaccines are expected soon.
