GDF, Police GGMC and Customs officials receive training to combat human trafficking

Over thirty frontline officials from the Guyana Defence Force, Customs, Guyana Police Force and Guyana Geology and Mines Commission have completed a two day workshop on Trafficking in Persons.

The workshop was conducted by the Ministry of Public Security’s Ministerial Task Force on Trafficking in Persons at the Guyana Police Force Training Centre.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mrs. Sandra Zuniga who is the Deputy Political Economic Chief of the United States Embassy congratulated the officials and reminded them that they will have to take the initiatives forward in the efforts to eradicate “this form of modern day slavery.”

“Your presence here today exemplifies your commitment to increase your efforts and use your knowledge to protect the weak and vulnerable from the dangers of modern day slavery”, she said.

She told the graduates that as they return to their respective fields, to continue exemplifying courage to ensure that that all members of society live in freedom and without fear.

“I know that together we can and will make Guyana a safer, more secure, and more inclusive place, if we keep speaking up and caring” she concluded.

Meanwhile Assistant Commissioner, Paul Williams in his brief remarks noted that while TIP (Trafficking in Persons) has become a National Issue, the prevention and help, as well as intelligence gathering must not only be the responsibility of Law enforcement agencies but that it must become the responsibility of “each and every citizen” of Guyana.

He said Guyanese must “wake up and walk the walk”, since working together as a whole would be “a force to be reckoned with” as opposed to standing alone.
