Regional carrier, InterCaribbean Airways, has officially launched its scheduled service to the Eugene F Correia International Airport, Ogle from Barbados. The airline has been operating in Guyana through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
To mark the launch of the Ogle service, the airline dedicated its specially painted “Spirit of Guyana” aircraft.
The “Spirit of Guyana” aircraft features the Guyana flag prominently on its tail and bears the name “Spirit of Guyana” on its nose, celebrating the nation’s heritage as it serves routes across the InterCaribbean network.
Founder and Chairman of InterCaribbean Airways, Lyndon Gardiner said the new service is in direct response to the demands of customers for service to the centrally located airport at Ogle.
“Five years ago, we made a promise to Guyana. Today, with the spirit of Guyana leading the way, we have taken another step in keeping back promise. And I want to take you back to 2020, when th world was still finding its footing in the middle of the pandemic. Many of the airlines were pulling back, closing routes, and reducing service. At InterCaribbean we made a different choice, we looked south to Grenada, to Barbados, and in December 2021 to Guyana, and what we saw was not uncertainty but opportunity. We saw communities that needed connection, we saw a Caribbean family that was incomplete, and we made a decision to expand into the southern Caribbean during the most challenging period. Some people say we were nuts but that decision changed everything for us and Guyana has been at the heart of that connectivity growth,” Gardiner said.
He said the airline is now building on the foundation laid four years ago.
“When we landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport four years ago, we knew that this was only the beginning. You told us what you needed, easier access closer to home and we listen. You see for InterCaribbean, listening isn’t good business, it is who we are,” Gardiner said.
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar said the expansion of the airline’s service to the airport at Ogle, augurs well for the Aviation and Tourism sectors in Guyana.
“This company has managed to give Guyana the spirit of Guyana aircraft with its tail painted with the colours of our flag that will fly across the Caribbean and into all of these destinations when it lands in Bridgetown Barbados and plugs into the regional network of InterCaribbean routes, and that plane will be seen everywhere in the Caribbean where our Diaspora lives. It is a proud moment for us,” Minister Indar said.
InterCaribbean currently services 28 destinations in 17 countries.
At the Ogle Airport, Roraima Airways will service as the airlines’ ground handling agents.
