The General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, today said he remains confident of his party emerging victorious in today’s elections, although he has noted that while there were some issues at polling stations, he would not be concerned or alarmed by them.
Speaking to reporters after casting his ballot Sparendaam this afternoon, Mr. Jagdeo said his party agents reported several glitches to him but he does not see them to be major.
“There are several reports that are not unusual on polling day and I do not want to elevate them to intractable problems, the other political and their leaders are magnifying minor issues and so far all of those matters have been addressed promptly by GECOM whenever they come up or identified,” Jagdeo said.
According to Mr. Jagdeo, during the course of the day, he received complaints about the ballot stamps not working properly and the slow pace of voting at some polling places. However, he said many of the issues were addressed.
He said he has noted vast improvements in the system when compared to the 2020 General and Regional Elections.
“We have less room now for capricious action on the part of any actor, whether they are party agents or GECOM and we suffered a lot in 2020 because instructions were changed several times during the course of the day and in the evening by Chief Elections Officer and the Deputy Chief Elections officer, which led to a lot of confusion on elections day,” Jagdeo said.
The Vice President said he has been assessing the trends of the elections and from the feedback he has been getting from agents across the country, his party remains confident of being re-elected.
