Misguided decision to place “Policia” on Guyana Police vehicles -VP Jagdeo

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo believes it was misguided for the administration of the Guyana Police Force to place the spanish word for Police on local Police vehicles.

Earlier this month, a number of Police vehicles were noticed with the new “Policia” signage plastered across the sides and back, triggering public outrage.

The Guyana Police Force cited the growing number of spanish speaking migrants for the decision.

However, at community meeting in the Dazzell Housing Scheme on Saturday, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said the addition of the spanish signage should have never taken place, indicating that the “Policia” signage should be removed from its prominent position on the police vehicles.

“It is misguided and the Police should have never put Policia there. It is not the emblem, its just the name, its still our emblem, the Guyana Police Force, but they put Policia in spanish, and they were instructed to change that. They must put Police, they can put in small letters Policia, in Portuguese and Spanish ect”, he said.

With the neighbouring Venezuela raising its voice in its ongoing claim of Guyana’s Essequibo region, and scores of Venezuelan migrants coming to Guyana weekly, many citizens said the Police Force’s decision should have been better thought out.

Opposition Member of Parliament and former Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan has criticized the decision and he believes the spanish word for Police should be removed from the vehicles completely.

The Vice President said the decision to add the word “Policia” to the Police vehicles should never been made.

“The key thing is Police, where Guyana is english speaking and they must put that at the top and they have been instructed to change that, and that was the instruction to the Police Force, it was misguided and should not have happened”, Jagdeo reiterated.

The Guyana Police Force has not said much on the issue, despite the widespread push back from the public.
