Ex-Policeman remanded for murder of young businessman

While showing no emotions, 24-year-old ex-policeman Yogeendra Sukhdeo walked into Court this morning wearing handcuffs, and was charged for the murder of 21-year-old businessman, Amit Singh.

The accused was not required to enter a plea to the indictable murder charge as he appeared in Court. He is being represented by Attorney Gordon Guilhuys, who told the Court that his client complained of being beaten by investigators while in custody.

Attorney Latchmie Rahamat has been appointed as the Special Prosecutor in the matter. She told the Court this morning that in addition to the Police recovering a large quantity of money that was stolen from the murder victim, investigators were also able to recover a bloodied piece of wood, which is suspected to be the murder weapon, as well as blood soaked clothing.

The accused was remanded to jail on the murder charge, and was told that the matter will continue on the 28th November.

A post-mortem examination conducted on the body of the murdered businessman, Amit Singh, listed the cause of death to be blunt trauma to the head, neck and face.

Based on the findings of the post-mortem examination, it was confirmed that the youth was savagely beaten to death. His body was found wrapped in a sheet at an empty Middle Road, La Penitence house last Tuesday.

Singh had gone to the house with Yogeendra Sukhdeo to purchase a large quantity of gold for his gold trading business.

However, according to a Police report, he was attacked, robbed of his money and badly beaten by Sukhdeo at the house.

The house where his body was found, is owned by the family of the murder accused.

Police investigators arrested Sukhdeo in connection with the murder, and he later led investigators to his Diamond, East Bank Demerara home, after reportedly confessing to the crime, according to a Police statement.

At his home, investigators said they found just over $7.7 million that they believe belonged to the dead businessman, Amit Singh.

Three other men were arrested in connection with the murder. However, while they admitted that they were employees of Yogeendra Sukhdeo, they denied any involvement in the crime.

As the family of the young businessman prepare for his funeral on Wednesday, the family of the main suspect has dispatched a letter of condolences to the grieving family.
