Police arrest additional suspects in gold purchase murder probe

As investigations continue into the brutal murder of 21-year-old businessman, Amit Singh, the Guyana Police Force this afternoon said that in addition to the prime suspect, who has confessed to the murder, investigators have arrested three additional suspects.

In a statement this afternoon, the Police said investigators managed to track down the other three men, but they denied their involvement in the murder, and instead told investigators that they are all employees of the main suspect, Yogeendra Sukhdeo.

The Police said the three men have provided investigators with information about their whereabouts at the time of the murder, and that information is now being ascertained.

The main suspect, Yogeendra Sukhdeo, who is an ex-Policeman, was arrested last evening following the discovery of Amit Singh’s body in a house in Middle Road, East La Penitence.

Singh who was known to Sukhdeo, reportedly went to the house yesterday afternoon at the Sukhdeo’s invitation to purchase a large quantity of gold. He reportedly operated a gold trading business.

The young gold dealer was attacked at the house, relieved of his money, and savagely beaten to death. His assailants left the scene with the money and his lifeless body was found wrapped in a sheet at the house.

This morning, the Police said the main suspect led investigators to his home in Diamond, East Bank Demerara after confessing to the murder. At the home, the Police discovered just over $7.7 million in cash, which investigators believe belonged to the murdered man.

The murder has left the dead man’s family completely broken down. One relative said although the youth was a businessman, they had no idea that when he left the family’s business place, he had that amount of money in his possession. A close family friend said the suspect and the murdered man were known to each other and might have had various business transactions in the past.

The house where Singh’s body was found is reportedly owned by the family of the prime suspect. A resident in the area said he would see the suspect, Yogeendra Sukhdeo, visiting the house often, but was unaware that he took someone to the house yesterday afternoon and committed that gruesome act.

Police investigators are continuing their probe of the murder.
