A new Regional Hospital at Bath on the West Coast of Berbice was commissioned on Wednesday, with the President promising that the new facility will match the services being offered at private facilities.
The Bath Regional Hospital is the third of six new regional hospitals to open as part of the Government’s healthcare enhancement programme.
At the commissioning ceremony, the President said the hospital is not just a healthcare facility, but it is one that would transform healthcare delivery in West Berbice.
He said the goal is to ensure that the facility, along with all others, deliver consistent, high class medical services to Guyanese.
“This hospital alone will expand and increase the availability of labs services by more than 40%, you had two ultra sound machines, in this facility will have three. For our mothers and new born babies, you had zero access to specialized neonatal care units, with this facility you have an NICU for four babies,” the President stated.

The new facility boasts of three ICU beds and three operating theaters as well as special equipment to address emergencies and care.
“This is what we have invested in here, a state of the art facility, a modern facility in region 5, because you deserve equal care and equal treatment like any other region in this country,” the President noted.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony said the Fort Wellington Hospital and the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital that operate in Region 5 do not have enough space for patients to be comfortably housed. He said there was also no adequate accident and emergency department at those two hospitals.

“What you are seeing is the steps that the government has taken for us to move towards a world class healthcare system. In this region, up to 2020, we had just about 15 health centers and over the last three years we have built and equipped an additional 4 in the region, so not only are we looking at territory care in the region, but we are ensuring, that we can have good primary care as well,” the Health Minister stated.
The $6.6B hospital also has a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department and Laboratories.
