President announces approval granted for establishment of Guyana Law School

The Council of Legal Education has granted full approval to Guyana to establish its own Law School, President Irfaan Ali announced this morning.

The President made the announcement during his inauguration address just after taking the oath of office at State House.

He said the move will mean that Guyanese law graduates will no longer be forced to complete their law studies in other CARICOM states.

“Based on a recent approval granted by the Council for Legal Education, we will commence work immediately on the establishment of Guyana’s very own Law School, thereby enabling hundreds of persons to qualify as Attorneys-at-law right here in Guyana with full rights to practice in CARICOM countries”, the President said.

Discussions on the establishment of a Law School in Guyana started in 2018 under the APNU+AFC Government, and those discussions continued throughout the President’s first term in office between 2020 and 2025.

In 2022, the Council of Legal Education found favour with a proposal by the Government of Guyana to provide the lands and buildings for a Guyana Law School to be established. A feasibly study was carried out two years later.
