The Government has announced that all public servants earning less than $500,000 per month will be receiving a one off tax free bonus of $25,000 in time for the holidays.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister, Winston Jordan as he wrapped up the budget debate on Friday.
Just after the budget presentation at the end of November, he had said there was a slim chance that the bonus would have been offered.
Last year, the government dolled out a $50,000 bonus to public servants. This year’s bonus comes just two months after public servants received salary increases that ranged from 1% to 10% based on their salary scale. That increase was retroactive to January 2016.
President Granger has in the past said he prefers that all public servants be given a bonus rather than any select group. Under the previous government, only the disciplined services received Christmas bonuses.
