Six months in jail for saltfish thief

A 45-year-old man, who carted off $59,000 worth in saltfish and provision from a Stabroek market vendor, was sentenced to six months in jail today after he pleaded guilty to the crime.

The man, Shawn Roberts, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today and explained that he stole the food items from the vendor to resell them so that he could make some money to buy medication that he needed.

He claimed that he was in an accident and needed money to purchase medication.

Roberts told the Magistrate that he was in the area and saw an opportunity to steal the items and took it.

But he also explained to the Court that he only stole saltfish and it was incorrect for the Court to be told that he stole both saltfish and provision.

He was taken into custody immediately to be carted off to jail after the Magistrate handed down the six-month sentence.
